"Mr President, I am deeply concerned by the constant worsening of the political situation in Venezuela. This country has a heightened responsibility to comply with the rule of law, having just become a member of the UN Security Council.
The economic and social crisis there is a direct outcome of growing political and ideological intolerance. Massive protests have been countered by the disproportionate use of force, the arrest of the opposition leader Leopoldo López and the scandalous suspension of opposition congressmen. But above all, it is unpardonable that almost 40 demonstrators have been killed by pro-government armed groups. This is not a rule of law state.
We express our solidarity with the people who are trying to bring Venezuela back to democracy and risking their lives. We ask the EU and Ms Mogherini to call for the immediate release of protestors and political prisoners."@et1
