"Copernicus is proposed to be the successor of the European Earth Observation Programme GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security) providing an earth observation system through use of satellites and other
monitoring to provide information on the environment, and also monitoring of natural or man-made disasters such as forest fires, or aiding emergency work in the wake of a typhoon (as was recently the case in the Philippines). Its main purpose is to provide data and information stemming from space-borne and
observations which contribute to the protection of the environment, to civil protection and to security – and ultimately to economic growth. The effects are expected to be in the region of EUR[nbsp ]30 billion financial benefits and some 50[nbsp ]000 new jobs over the period 2015-2030."@mt2
