"I voted in favour of this resolution. The situation in Turkey illustrates clearly that there is a long way to go on the path of democracy. Peaceful demonstrations against the ruling authorities, who continuously oppress any opposing opinions and the creeping islamisation, show that the cup has spilt over for the people of Turkey.
As the EU, we have to very carefully monitor the situation and draw conclusions. Prime Minister Erdoğan has shown zero willingness to enter into dialogue with the people; instead he has used excessive violence to smother the protests. He has ordered domestic media not to show one second from the demonstrations, which effectively means erasing media freedom. Is this a regime we want to negotiate an EU membership? A country with the highest number of imprisoned journalists, where tear-gas is used to suppress a peaceful crowd, where the government refuses any concessions to citizens’ demands or even to speak to the people?"@et1
