"Madam President, Commissioner Füle, the number of refugees from Syria has passed the one million mark. Throughout the conflict all sorts of abuses have been documented: war crimes, human rights and humanitarian abuses on a large scale have been perpetrated by both the Assad regime and the various rebel groups. With no political solution in sight, militarisation of the conflict has escalated.
Russia and Iran have continued to arm the Assad side. Syrian rebels have a supply of weapons from Saudi Arabia and Qatar with the help of the USA, despite protestations that such transfers are illegal under international law.
In spite of a desperate humanitarian crisis, the international community and even some EU Member States appear more concerned with ‘who to harm’ than ‘how to aid’. If we want to be effective in reducing war crimes and abuses in Syria we should enforce more strictly – and not lift – the arms embargo and advocate more, and not less, of a political and diplomatic solution."@it2
