"I voted in favour of the reports on European patent. The discussion over European patent is long overdue; the decisions should have been made years ago. This has been one of the lost opportunities to boost innovation and competitiveness. A unitary patent is needed to eliminate the counterproductive procedure which made the granting of the European patent conditional on parallel procedures in Member States, and had to be formalised in the respective national languages. It resulted in extremely high costs and considerable delays, which deepened inequalities for SMEs. An agreed unitary patent will significantly reduce costs and ease filing the patents, becoming therefore more accessible for SMEs and individuals. An increase in registering European patents will hopefully invigorate EU competitiveness and contribute to European innovation as well. However, we still miss an all-European solution, as two Member States have contested the creation of unitary patent."@et1
