The European Council is about to hold its meeting on June 19 and 20 in Brussels. We should first take time to hear the explanations of Taoiseach Brian Cowen and listen to his proposals on how to go on with Ireland. In my opinion the remaining eight Member States must go on with the ratification as scheduled, despite the Irish "no". The Treaty of Lisbon is indispensable for the successful continuation of the European project. It would be unthinkable to restart new negotiations, as the European Union has occupied itself with negotiations on its future for the past nine years.
