Men när uppfattningen hos majoriteten i sju medlemsstater, inklusive min egen, är emot framtida utvidgning är det dags att förklara för allmänheten och bemöta dem som försöker stoppa utvecklingen, att avvisa dem som till och med i denna resolution försöker använda termer som ”konkreta möjligheter” eller ”att rita om gränserna” för att undergräva EU:s befintliga åtaganden, att bemöta dem som likt det brittiska konservativa partiet säger att EU måste välja mellan utvidgning och fördjupning – det måste vi inte. Det är också dags att bemöta den yttersta högern som medvetet underblåser rädslan för att den nya invandringen hotar människors jobb och försörjning, när det finns bevis på raka motsatsen, att lyfta fram dem som, till och med på nytt i denna resolution, välkomnar utveckling i Kroatien men inte samma utveckling i Turkiet, att erkänna att de muslimska majoritetsbefolkningarna i Makedonien, Bosnien och Albanien också delar det europeiska ödet och att understryka att en paus för eftertanke om konstitutionsfördraget inte kan bli en ursäkt för ett fullständigt stopp för ny utvidgning."@sv²¹
