Mr President, the historic events of August 1980 started the process which ended the cold war and led to the reunification of Europe. The action led at that time by Solidarność is a symbol of the value that all Europeans attach to the shared values of freedom and solidarity.
Because of the courage and determination of the leaders of Solidarność and the inspiration it provided to so many, the influence of the strike of shipyard workers in Gdansk did not stop at the Polish borders. It brought fresh sap to the many buds of dissent and democracy which were then burgeoning throughout central and eastern Europe and which allowed the unification of our continent.
As was mentioned by the President of the Commission in Gdansk on 31 August, 'Solidarity' was an inspired choice of name for the union which was born from the strike in Gdansk. It conveyed strength, determination and focus. Solidarity is today one of the six titles of the European Charter for Fundamental Rights. The remembrance of the events of August 1980 enriches this word with meaning and emotion.
Freedom was what Solidarność fought for and it is today also closely associated with solidarity as a fundamental value shared by Europeans. There is no Europe without solidarity. Solidarność is a meaningful symbol to remind future generations of Europeans of this alliance.
The Commission has been happy to contribute to the commemorative events which took place in Gdansk three weeks ago, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of these historic events, upon the invitation of the Polish Government and of the honourable Members of this Parliament. Señor Presidente, los históricos acontecimientos del mes de agosto de 1980 pusieron en marcha el proceso que puso fin a la Guerra Fría y que condujo a la reunificación de Europa. La acción encabezada entonces por «Solidaridad» es un símbolo de la importancia que tienen para todos los europeos los valores comunes de libertad y solidaridad.
Gracias al valor y la firme voluntad de los dirigentes de «Solidaridad» y a la inspiración que infundieron en tantos otros, la influencia de la huelga de los trabajadores de los astilleros de Gdansk no se detuvo en las fronteras polacas, sino que inyectó nueva savia en numerosos brotes de disidencia y democracia que florecían en toda Europa Central y Oriental, y que permitieron la unificación de nuestro continente.
Como señaló el Presidente de la Comisión en Gdansk el 31 de agosto, el nombre de «Solidaridad» fue una buena elección para el sindicato nacido de la huelga de Gdansk. Monsieur le Président, les événements historiques d’août 1980 ont amorcé le processus qui a mis un terme à la guerre froide et conduit à la réunification de l’Europe. L’action menée alors par Solidarnosc est un symbole du prix que tous les Européens attachent aux valeurs partagées de liberté et de solidarité.
Grâce au courage et à la détermination des dirigeants de Solidarnosc et à l’inspiration que ce mouvement a été pour tant de personnes, l’influence de la grève des ouvriers des chantiers navals de Gdansk ne s’est pas arrêtée aux frontières de la Pologne. Elle a apporté un sang neuf aux nombreux bourgeons de dissidence et de démocratie qui fleurissaient alors en Europe centrale et de l’Est, et qui ont permis l’unification de notre continent.

"Mijnheer de Voorzitter, de historische gebeurtenissen in augustus 1980 vormden het begin van het proces waardoor de Koude Oorlog uiteindelijk tot een einde kwam en Europa weer verenigd werd. De actie die toentertijd door Solidariteit werd geleid, staat symbool voor het belang dat alle Europeanen hechten aan de gedeelde waarden van vrijheid en solidariteit.
Dankzij de moed en vastberadenheid van de leiders van Solidariteit en de inspiratiebron die zij voor zovelen vormden, zijn de gevolgen van de staking op de scheepswerf in Gdansk niet tot Pools grondgebied beperkt gebleven. Die staking heeft voor nieuwe impulsen gezorgd voor de vele ontluikende knoppen van protest en democratie in het toenmalige Midden- en Oost-Europa, waardoor uiteindelijk de hereniging van ons continent mogelijk is geworden.

Trouxe um novo vigor a muitas sementes de dissidência e democracia que então germinavam rapidamente em toda a Europa Central e Oriental e que permitiram a unificação do nosso continente.
Tal como foi referido pelo Presidente da Comissão, em Gdansk, a 31 de Agosto, o nome “Solidariedade” foi a escolha inspirada de um nome para o sindicato que nasceu da greve de Gdansk. Transmitia força, determinação e rumo. A solidariedade é hoje um dos seis títulos da Carta Europeia dos Direitos Fundamentais. A memória dos acontecimentos de Agosto de 1980 enriquece esta palavra com significado e emoção.
Foi pela liberdade que o
lutou e a liberdade está hoje também estreitamente associada à solidariedade como valor fundamental partilhado pelos europeus. Não há Europa sem solidariedade. O
é um símbolo cheio de significado que permitirá recordar esta aliança às futuras gerações de europeus.
Foi com satisfação que a Comissão se associou, a convite do Governo polaco e dos senhores deputados deste Parlamento, às comemorações que tiveram lugar em Gdansk, há três semanas, para celebrar o 25º aniversário destes acontecimentos históricos. "Mr President, the historic events of August 1980 started the process which ended the cold war and led to the reunification of Europe. The action led at that time by Solidarność is a symbol of the value that all Europeans attach to the shared values of freedom and solidarity.
Because of the courage and determination of the leaders of Solidarność and the inspiration it provided to so many, the influence of the strike of shipyard workers in Gdansk did not stop at the Polish borders. It brought fresh sap to the many buds of dissent and democracy which were then burgeoning throughout central and eastern Europe and which allowed the unification of our continent.
As was mentioned by the President of the Commission in Gdansk on 31 August, 'Solidarity' was an inspired choice of name for the union which was born from the strike in Gdansk. It conveyed strength, determination and focus. Solidarity is today one of the six titles of the European Charter for Fundamental Rights. The remembrance of the events of August 1980 enriches this word with meaning and emotion.
Freedom was what Solidarność fought for and it is today also closely associated with solidarity as a fundamental value shared by Europeans. There is no Europe without solidarity. Solidarność is a meaningful symbol to remind future generations of Europeans of this alliance.
The Commission has been happy to contribute to the commemorative events which took place in Gdansk three weeks ago, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of these historic events, upon the invitation of the Polish Government and of the honourable Members of this Parliament. De historiska händelserna i augusti 1980 var inledningen till den process som fick slut på det kalla kriget och ledde till att Europa kunde återförenas. Aktionen som då leddes av Solidaritet är en symbol för den betydelse som alla européer fäster vid de gemensamma värdena frihet och solidaritet.
Tack vare Solidaritetsledarnas mod och beslutsamhet och den inspiration det gav till så många stannade påverkan från strejken bland varvsarbetarna i Gdansk inte vid den polska gränsen. Den gav ny livskraft åt de spirande meningsskiljaktigheterna och demokratin som då grodde i hela centrala och östra Europa och som gjorde att vår kontinent kunde enas.
Som kommissionsordföranden nämnde i Gdansk den 31 augusti var ”Solidaritet” ett inspirerande namnval för den fackförening som uppstod ur strejken i Gdansk. Namnet förmedlade styrka, beslutsamhet och fokus. Solidaritet är i dag en av sex rubriker i den europeiska stadgan om grundläggande rättigheter. Minnena av händelserna i augusti 1980 berikar detta ord med mening och känsla.
Solidaritet kämpade för frihet, och den är även i dag nära förbunden med solidaritet som en grundläggande värdering som delas av européerna. Det finns inget EU utan solidaritet. Solidaritet är en meningsfull symbol för att erinra kommande generationer européer om denna allians.
Kommissionen har glatt sig åt att kunna bidra till minneshögtiden som ägde rum i Gdansk för tre veckor sedan, för att fira 25-årsdagen av dessa historiska händelser, efter inbjudan från den polska regeringen och de ärade ledamöterna här i parlamentet.
